Noosa Camp Day 2 – First Beach session

Day 2 started bright and early with a 6am wake up call allowing time for a quick snack before boarding the buses at 6:20am to the pool.  A beautiful, clear morning for the team and a slightly different session this morning. Our resident Olympian/Bus Driver – Chris Fydler, took the team on a “freestyle turning skills” session for an hour followed by skills on the other strokes by Brandon and Raf. Streamlining, breakouts, and turn approaches were all practiced and reinforced during the session and the practicing of good skills, will be a continuing theme this week.

Water Warriors for the session were: Jaimey, Rani and Maddie – well done girls.

Teams were announced last night and the first team activity – the naming and flag making took place.  The 5 Teams this year and their members are:

Jess then took the team for the first beach dry land session, a short 200m walk from our accommodations. – Hard work despite the location and perfect weather.  Might be a few sore muscles tomorrow, but of course – “No Complaino”.

Supercoach Speechley joined the team just before the afternoon session, straight from the National Talent Identification Camp in Canberra. The session focussed on body position in the water for all the team as we dodged another big storm just as we finished.

Water Warriors this afternoon were: Shaun, Georgia P, Katie Mc for being highly engaged in learning new skills.

Looking forward to more fun tomorrow.

Noosa Camp Day 1 – The Arrival

A smooth trip north to Maroochydore on Jetstar resulted with everyone arriving with smiles and plenty of energy.  From there, the short 15min trip to our accommodation which is a fantastic group of bungalows basically on Peregian Beach.  We managed to take a couple of photos of the beach this morning to make some of the parents jealous.

The team then endured the introductory address from Brandon, welcoming the Rookies and reminding them of the Abbotsleigh Swimming Camp motto – “No Complaino”!  From there straight into lunch and a brief time to settle into rooms before heading out to our first session at Noosa Aquatic Centre. Noosa Camp – Day (0)

Well, the bus is loaded and heading North on its 1030km journey to Noosa in preparation for the Abbotsleigh Swimming Team Camp 2015 which starts tomorrow (Tuesday).  Big thanks to the boys  and Darryn who acted as our removalist team at Abbotsleigh.  Looking forward to meeting the team at Sunshine Coast airport on Tuesday morning for the big week!

Move over parents!

The Black and Gold squads took over and ran club night this week. Junior, learn-to-swim and non-club swimmers were invited to come along for a fun evening at the pool. Everybody went home with a participation certificate and lolly bag. Don’t tell Brad Pamp our nutritionist!

Massive thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this event which is now rumoured to become a termly occurrence.

For no particularly good reason your correspondent has decided to add to the names of the following swimmers: Matt ‘take your marks’ Kelly, Lachy ‘heat 2 lane 5’ Dunlop, Emily ‘have a lolly’ Ong, Zoe ‘come on girls get the spelling right and write neatly’ Lysaght, and Tane ‘my club shirt is still in the wash’ Bidois. Further suggestions are invited.

Ben ‘swims like a floppy octopus’ Ramsden.

Abbotsleigh 3rd in NSW at State Short Course

“Team Abb – It’s time to shine” were the instructions from Leanne, and shine we did!

33 swimmers + 222 swims + 4 coaches + several tonnes of highly nutritious food (with not a lolly in sight) + many sleep deprived parents = 1,701 points. That’s #3 in NSW behind only the mighty Cherrybrook Carlile and Carlile. And our 17 gold + 9 silver + 11 bronze = 37 medals placed us #2 in NSW on the medal tally.

SNSW official results are here.

Leanne’s report here.

Many thanks for all the photos from Ken, Helen, Chris, Leanne and Brandon. They are gradually being uploaded here (use your mouse wheel to spin through them faster). Selected relay videos here.

We are what we eat

The gut and the brain are intimately connected. That was the core message of Nutritionist Brad Pamp’s entertaining and energising talk to the club recently.

Food choices have a significant effect on the things we do in life and the behaviours we display, Brad explained. Any by that he meant how we handle daily life, our temperament, anxiety levels, our results at school and our performance in the sporting arena.

Chris the Pres benefitted from Brad’s advice during his own swimming career and was able to give some interesting perspectives on how sports nutrition has changed over time. We look forward to welcoming Brad back to Abbotsleigh in future.
